Rafael Aguirre in concert


The final concert in the 2012-13 Great Artist Series will feature world-

renowned Spanish classical guitarist Rafael Aguirre. An international artist with

presence in over seventeen countries, Spanish guitarist Rafael Aguirre has won

first prizes in twelve of the most competitive international guitar competitions

(a record in Spain). In 2006 he became the first guitarist to win the contest

"Schmolz & Bickenbach" for all instruments, and most recently was awarded

Second Prize in the prestigious 2012 Parkening International Guitar

Competition. Mr. Aguirre has appeared at Carnegie Hall (NY), Tchaikovsky

Hall (Russia), Palau de la Música (Valencia) and the Tonhalle (Düsseldorf), and

performed with the Baden Philharmonic, Malga Philharmonic, Neue Philhar-

monie Westfalen, Extremadura's Philarmonic and the Syrian National Orches-

tra. Mr. Aguirre has released two CD's, for Spanish Radio and Television

(RTVE) and the Naxos label, which was included in the selection list for the

Latin GRAMMY'S ® "Best Classical Album." This is his St. Louis debut.

Financial assistance for this performance has been provided by the Missouri Arts Council, the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis, and the Arts and Education Council. Presented in cooperation with the Hispanic Arts Council and the Cheshire Hotel, and welcomed by KWMU Public Radio 90.7 FM and the Nine Network of Public Media.
