The Cloistered Muse

Not even the cloistered confines of a convent could stifle their creativity.

On Sunday, April 14, 2013 the Missouri Women's Chorus will present The Cloistered Muse, a concert of music both for nuns and by nuns in Bologna and the Lombardy region of Italy. During the 16th and 17th centuries, Italian convents were famous for their incredible singing nuns. The music heard told stories of sacred texts and of their own sacred poetry.

Convents of Renaissance and early Baroque Italy yielded musical compositions stunning in both their number and quality, as music was oft times a nun's sole avenue of creativity. The Missouri Women's Chorus will sample the works of composers who wrote for nuns: Adriano Banchieri, Romano Micheli and Ciulio Cesare Arresti, alongside works composed by nuns: Chiara Margarita Cozzolani, Suor Maria Xaveria Perucona and Bianca Maria Meda.

Under the direction of Artistic Director Scott Schoonover, The Cloistered Muse will be presented at 3:00 p.m. on the picturesque grounds of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet in the Holy Family Chapel at 6400 Minnesota Ave, St. Louis, Missouri 63111. The Cloistered Muse will feature soprano Elise LaBarge, mezzo-soprano Kara Cornell, Elizabeth Mcdonald on cello and Cathy Benton on continuo. Tickets are available in advance for $12 [$10 Students] or $15 at the door and can be purchased through any member of the choir or by calling 314-591-2948.

Prior to the concert Washington University musicologist, Dr. Craig Monson (author of many books including Nuns Behaving Badly: Tales of Music, Magic, Art, and Arson in the Convents of Italy and most recently, Divas in the Convent: Nuns, Music, and Defiance in Seventeenth-Century Italy) will explore the history of these composers and the rich history of the Italian convents. The lecture will begin at 2:15 in the Holy Family Chapel.

Founded in December 2010, the Missouri Women's Chorus has as its mission "to achieve excellence in the performance of a repertoire of quality music written or arranged for women's voices." As an auditioned ensemble, the Chorus renews its rosters annually. For more information,
