Jun Kaneko Exhibit

Duane Reed Gallery presents the latest work of acclaimed artist Jun Kaneko. Exhibition opens Friday, May 17th with a reception that evening 5 – 8pm. The exhibition will run through June 22nd.

Gallery hours: Tuesday through Saturday 10-5pm.

Jun Kaneko, born in Nagoya, Japan in 1942, has continually experimented with the traditional bounds of the ceramic medium to elevate ceramics to the mainstream of contemprary art. Jun Kaneko's most recognized sculptural form is the boldly glazed, monumental "Dango," (Japanese for "rounded form," or "dumpling"). His enormous dango forms, rounded monoliths which range as high as eleven feet, challenge the physical limitations of the material and the firing process. His most recent visiting installation in Millenium park boasts 22 of Kaneko's 6- 6-½ foot "Tanukis," inspired by Japanese folklore of a mischievous badger or "raccoon dog." Standing within scheming proximity, these exuberant and cartoonish figures engage both children and serious art enthusiasts alike. Kaneko's canvas-like treatment of his finished forms declares the ceramic space as  monuments of Zen tranquility, playful design, and straightforward formal delight.

Kaneko's other prominant work includes commissions in the costume and set designs for productions of Fidelio, Madama Butterfly and The Magic Flute by such notable opera houses as San Francisco Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Madison Opera, Atlanta Opera, and Opera Omaha.
